Artist Statement

I became a weaver by accident while studying ceramics at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. I was drawn to the linear world of weaving, the intricate interwoven patterns of color and design, and the interaction of the chosen fiber to create a lovely fabric. I especially enjoy making a handwoven piece that has the magic of iridescence.
Collage is a big part of my artistic expression. This is not linear art, but the
interaction of the pattern, color and design are as meaningful in collage as they are in weaving. To begin the collage composition, I choose a paper that elicits an emotion - a human figure or something as simple as a damaged magazine cover. As the collage pieces are chosen, they develop a pattern that complements the original inspiration of the collage. The pieces migrate through the process until there is balance and meaning,
a harmonic relationship of elements that may be calm and serene or jarring and provocative.
I like to add unexpected elements as a highlight - insect wings, corn silk, fabric, and I always include Swarovski crystals that wink out as an enticement to gaze a bit closer. Collage suggests an idea or a form that may not be what it appears to be. I invite you to get nose close to find a waving figure tucked into a space, a person peering over a ledge
or fleeing down a mountain, and wonder what it may mean.
We all have environmental and social influences in our lives that play into the interpretation of art. Art should provoke thought.
I hope that you are provoked.
